Tandara Lutheran Camp
Halls Gap, Grampians, VICTORIA
Situated in the township of Halls Gap, at the base of Boronia Peak, Grampians National Park, the camp certainly lives up to its promotional message of a ‘retreat among the mountains’.
A 100 bed camp on nearly 7 acres, doesn’t in anyway feel like a small property. Set well back from the main Grampians Road in an open grassed flat area it takes in the giant panorama of the Wonderland Range and Mount William Range. Darren Linke takes me on a tour of the camp and we first pass the outdoor chapel and then move onto the ‘Stations of the Cross Walk’.
‘The Stations’ are a special feature of the camp and are a brilliant self-guided activity for any domination. The ‘tomb’ station with massive boulder is pretty authentic looking. I think anyone who attempts to roll the stone away from the entrance would be unsuccessful. Although a sneaky entrance at the back gives easy access.
A large number of activities are on site such as high-ropes course, leap of faith, low ropes and archery to name a few, but the surrounding off-site activities really make use of the Grampians National Park such as the nature trails, night walks, rockclimbing, abseiling, canoeing and bike riding.
The Grampians is really a Mecca for these activities. No wonder so many camps are located throughout Halls Gap.
I really liked the outdoor undercover fireplace with lounge chairs. Sitting here on a cool evening listening to the hordes of sulphur-crested cockatoos (which is so common in Halls Gap) scurry about the nearby rock walls, would be delightful way to spend some time mingling with friends.
