Next stop on my ACT/NSW visit was also in Tharwa, ACT at Birrigai at Tidbinilla a camp I had visited over five years ago. The impression that it left on me back then, still did not disappoint. What really blows me away is that it is located in the most stunning position- only 30 mins drive from the Nation’s Capital, Canberra, yet it has an isolated feeling that it could place it hundreds of kilometres from any township. Birrigai specialises in educational programs (like a school classroom away from school) for pre-schoolers to year twelve.
All programs are aligned to support schools in the delivery of the Australian Curriculum. In saying that, leadership and team-building programs are also run for community and corporate groups. All programs are delivered by on-site teachers, which include heritage programs (set in 19th century style classrooms, albeit with earth floors) and environmental programs. The 196 bed camp is located below Gibraltar Rock, has two outdoor amphitheatres and a superb walking track that creatively describes the local geology and stages of the rock cycle. Lots of challenging activities are also on site, such as the leap of faith, giant swing, low-ropes, crate stacking, flying-fox and abseiling on the local cliffs.
